The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps Welcomes Josh Thye as New Corps Director

Tempe, AZ – November 7, 2023 – The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps, a world-renowned organization dedicated to fostering excellence in music and the performing arts, is thrilled to announce the appointment of Mr. Josh Thye as its new Corps Director, effective immediately.

Mr. Thye brings a wealth of experience and a stellar background in music education, leadership, and community engagement to his new role. He currently serves as the Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts for the Tempe Union High School District (AZ). With his impressive educational achievements, including a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Arizona, a Master’s degree in Administration from the University of Phoenix, and a Master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University, Mr. Thye is well-equipped to lead The Academy to new heights.

Before joining The Academy, Mr. Thye served as the Director of Bands at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, AZ, from 2003 to 2022. During his tenure at Desert Vista, his bands achieved remarkable success, performing at prestigious venues such as the Music for All Festival in Indianapolis, Chicago Symphony Hall, and Carnegie Hall in New York on four separate occasions.

Under Mr. Thye’s direction, the Thunder Marching Band became a nine-time Arizona State Marching Champion, a testament to his dedication and leadership. His commitment to excellence in music education earned him numerous accolades, including being named a finalist for the Governor’s Arts Award in 2013 and receiving the Excellence in Education Award from the Tempe Diablos in 2014.

Additionally, Mr. Thye’s passion for inclusive music education led him to establish a groundbreaking pilot program for the national model of ‘United Sound’ in 2013. This program empowers students with Special Needs to participate in music ensembles, offering them an invaluable opportunity to explore their musical talents.

Josh Thye’s connection with The Academy goes beyond his new role as Corps Director. He is a proud alumnus of The Academy and the AAPA, having been a member of the trumpet section during the summer of 2000 when the first chamber brass ensemble was created. In 2001, he was a member of the Arizona Academy of the Performing Arts when it was officially founded and performed at the first Southwest Corps Connection (DCI) event in July 2001 at Desert Vista High School.

Mark Richardson, Executive Director for the Arizona Academy of the Performing Arts, expressed his excitement about Josh Thye joining The Academy, saying,

“I am thrilled beyond words to welcome Josh into the fold here at The Academy. Having known Josh for over 20 years, I can attest to his impeccable character, passion for young people, and his remarkable ability to embody a caring and personable demeanor. I truly can’t imagine a more perfect individual to assume this role and help our organization move forward in the next chapter of our story.” – Mark Richardson, Executive Director

Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Thye’s personal life is equally inspiring. He is married to Jennifer, the owner of Imoni Events, and together they have three wonderful children – Madelyn, Amelia, and Oliver.
