The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps is pleased to introduce the staff selections for the 2016 Visual program.  Taking lead in the Visual Caption Head position will be Shant Keuroghelian.

Shant KeuroghelianShant Keuroghelian is involved with both the musical and visual aspects of the marching arts. His marching career began with Pacific Crest in 2006. In 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2011 he marched with the 17-time World Champion Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps, serving as Trumpet Section Leader his last year.

Shant has had the privilege of working with a vast number of ensembles including Rancho Verde High School, Rancho Cucamonga High School, Chino Hills High School, Etiwanda High School, Mission Viejo High School, Colony High School, Chaffey High School, Ayala High School, Blue Devils “B” Drum and Bugle Corps, and Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps. In the summer of 2015, Shant made his international debut working with the Calgary Stampede Showband of Calgary, Alberta, Canada as a clinician. 2015 also marked the first year of his drill-writing career with Anaheim High School, in Anaheim, California. He is currently the Visual Caption Head at Upland High School (his Alma Mater) in Upland, California, and the Visual Caption Head at The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps from Tempe, Arizona.

Receiving his bachelor’s degree in Music Education from California State University, Fullerton, Shant is now Assistant Director at Pioneer Jr. High School in Upland, Ca. He is also a private trumpet teacher and a freelance trumpet player, performing in a variety of venues, including Disneyland.

Abraham Garcia

Abe GarciaAbraham received his music education degree from Arizona State University and was a member of the ASU Sun Devil Marching Band for four seasons. His drum corps experience included three years with the Arizona Academy from 2009-2011. After aging out, he returned to the activity as a visual instructor with the Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps during both the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Abraham is active as an instructor with high school programs in the southwest, including The Desert Vista Thunder Marching Band. He also serves as both the Brass and Visual caption head with The Hamilton High School Marching Huskies Band. This will be Abraham’s third consecutive season on visual staff with the Arizona Academy.

Ryan Loveland

Ryan LovelandRyan Loveland is from Southern California, but currently residing in Arizona. He began his marching career with the Upland High School marching band playing trombone. He marched his first couple years in drum corps with Pacific Crest in 2006 and 2008. In 2009 he aged out with the 17-time World Champion, Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps. He has been teaching all throughout Southern California since 2007, including school such as Mission Viejo, Ayala, and Etiwanda High School.

He recently received his certificate in fine arts from MCC. He is excited and looking forward to continue his teaching career with the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps for his third straight year.

Neechelle Takinen

Neechelle TakinenThis is Neechelle’s second year on staff with the Academy. She is an Arizona native. Neechelle began teaching dance at a young age and went on to work with over a dozen Arizona high schools teaching visual movement, color guard, cymbals, flute, and conducting. Neechelle also worked with Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps on their 2014 field show and is currently on staff with Pulse Percussion.

Neechelle’s performance experience includes 21 years of competitive dance and 12 years of music. She has been a part of many independent marching ensembles, including Mosaic Independent Percussion, Dark Sky Percussion, Arizona State University Indoor, Pacific Crest, Breakthrough Percussion, and Pulse. She has also made a number of appearances in the Russian Nutcracker and the Snow Queen Ballet.

Neechelle is a graduate of Arizona State University where she received her dual BA in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. She is currently attending Pima Medical Institute where she is studying to become an MA.

Andres Hernandez

Andres HernandezAndres Hernandez is a student at the University of California Riverside where he is currently studying as a History Major. Andres has been involved with the Marching Arts for 9 years, first marching with Liberty High School, where he was Drum Major for two years. He continued his marching experience with the Riverside City College Marching Tigers from 2011-2013, then with Blue Devils “B” Corps in the summer of 2012, and lastly with The Concord Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps in 2013. After aging out, Andres began teaching as a Visual instructor, starting at Woodbridge High School from 2013-2015, and Blue Devils “B” Corps in 2014-2015. Andres currently teaches at Mater Dei High School since 2014, Upland High School since 2015, and The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps since the summer of 2015.


Anthony Clark

Anthony ClarkAnthony Clark is excited to return to the Academy for his second year teaching visual. Living in Fontana, California, Anthony is currently studying Computer Science at Norco Community College with plans to transfer to California State University, San Bernardino to complete his Bachelor’s degree. Anthony has a deep love for the pageantry arts, and has been involved with them for almost 10 years. His marching experiences include Boston Crusaders (2009-2010), Blue Devils (2012 and 2014), and Broken City Percussion (2016).

Anthony also has much experience teaching in the Southern California area, teaching a handful of school throughout the years. These schools include Upland High School, Nogales High School, Chaffey High School, Fontana High School, and Etiwanda High School, where he is currently the visual caption head. Anthony is excited to continue growing as an instructor and share his passion with the Academy this summer.

Omar Negron

Omar NegronOmar Negron marched with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps from 2010-2011 and earned the world championship in 2010. He served as a visual instructor and consultant for Winter Park High School, and Freedom High School up through 2015. Omar also taught INFINITY Percussion in 2012, and The Louisiana Stars Drum and Bugle Corps in 2014-2015. Omar is excited to begin his journey on staff with the Academy Drum and Bugle Corps.

Mason Tanquary

Mason TanquaryMason Tanquary enjoys sharing his passion for music through being a visual educator and adjudicator located in Chandler Arizona. He is continuing to pursue his degree in music education as a euphonium musician.

Mason has been fortunate enough to have participated in a variety of ensembles including The Academy Drum Corps (Euphonium/Baritone) from 2010-2014, Arizona State Sun Devil Marching Band (trombone) 2010 Basha High School 2007-2010

His teaching experience includes Pacific Crest Drum Corps 2015 as a visual instructor, and many local high schools in the Phoenix area. Current caption head/visual designer of the Basha High School fall and winter programs. Along with teaching he also adjudicates for WGAZ.

Mason is very excited to be returning to The Academy for his 6th year with the organization.

Michael Kirkbride

Michael KirkbrideMichael Kirkbride is a marching, music, and movement educator in the Southern California area, as well as a freelance bassoonist.

After marching from 2004 and aging out with Pacific Crest in 2009, he moved to Portland, Oregon to finish his degree in Psychology and pursue a degree in Music Theory & Composition at Portland State University. After teaching in the north-western high school marching circuit for a year, he was asked to be apart of The Cascades Drum & Bugle Corps’ visual staff in the 2010 and 2011 seasons. In 2012, he became the visual caption-head for Cascades. He later moved back to Southern California, where he continued to study composition with Morten Lauridsen and Bruce Miller, consult the Vanguard Cadets in their 2013 season, as well as spending 2 years learning Martha Graham modern dance technique.

Currently living in Long Beach, CA, he teaches several groups in the WBA & SCSBOA circuit, while also working at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

After two years away from DCI, he is very excited to start this new chapter with The Academy Drum & Bugle Corps 2016 season.

Tim Darbonne

Tim DarbonneTim Darbonne began his marching career as a baritone player in the Erath High School marching band from Erath, Louisiana. After graduating he went on to march euphonium with The Blue Devils Drum and Bugle Corps and aged out in 2007 as a part of the corps’ 12th DCI World Championship. In 2011 Tim returned “home” to be a visual instructor at The Blue Devils, a position he holds to this day. In his 5 years on staff with “The Blue Team”, the corps has won 3 World Championships (2012, 2014, 2015) and 2 consecutive Best Visual Performance Awards. (2014, 2015)

Tim is a highly sought after visual instructor/clinician in the southern United States. He has instructed several award winning marching bands including the LD Bell High School Band, the Flowermound High School Band, the Blue Springs Golden Regiment, and the Hebron High School Band. Prior to joining The Blue Devils Visual Staff, Tim was a Visual Instructor for The Academy, The Madison Scouts, and The Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps.

Tim has designed for ensembles in 12 different states and in China. His designs have earned numerous “Superior” and “Best in Class” ratings including multiple State Champion and BOA Regional Finalist Awards. Tim was the drill designer for Pacific Crest Drum and Bugle Corps in 2013 and 2014. In 2013 the corps received it’s highest composite score and placement in corps history. Tim was a co-founder of the Louisiana Stars Drum and Bugle Corps where he was also the Visual Designer/Supervisor for 2014 and 2015.

Tim is currently living in Lewisville, Texas where he is a full time visual designer, tech, and clinician. Tim is an alumnus of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and enjoys meeting up to sing at any event possible.
